The Ontario Provincial Police is warning residents that there will be a large police presence on County Road 11 in Essex.

Police, the Kingsville Fire Department, and Essex Windsor Emergency Medical Services were at a home on County Road 11 late last night, where they found the body of a 43-year-old man.

The investigation is in its early stages, so the OPP haven't released a lot of information.

There is no threat to public safety, and police will provide updates when they are available.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has issued a heat warning for Thursday.

It issued the warning Thursday morning based on information from Environment and Climate Change Canada that the temperature will reach the threshold.

The health unit issues a heat warning whenever there are two or more consecutive days of daytime highs equal to or above 31 C, overnight temperatures are 21 C or higher, or when the humidex reaches 42 C.

It wants residents to know heat-related illness is preventable. It recommends drinking water even when you're not thirsty, taking a cool bath or shower, and limiting outdoor activities to the coolest part of the day.

Anyone can suffer a heat-related illness, but older adults, babies and small children, those who work outside, and those with certain medical conditions are most at risk.

Warning signs of a heat-related illness include dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness and confusion. Anyone suffering those symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.

If you live in LaSalle and you're not sure who you'll vote for in the upcoming municipal election, you're invited to a Meet the Candidates event later this month.

The event on September 28, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Event Centre on Front Road, will feature candidates running for LaSalle Mayor, LaSalle town council, and trustee positions on the school boards.

"It offers voters the chance to hear directly from candidates, compare perspectives, and make informed decisions" on Election Day, October 26, said a release from the town.

There's no debate or moderated questions. The town called it a public service to assist voters in accessing candidate-supplied information. Residents can also confirm their status on the Voters' List or update their voter information. Valid identification will be needed to make changes to the voter list.

LaSalle will also post information about the vote, key dates, and election resources on its webpage.

The City of Windsor is preparing for its annual Point-in-Time count, which measures the number of people experiencing homelessness.

The count is a national initiative aimed at measuring the rate of homelessness and housing insecurity in communities across the country.

Volunteers will work with a team of experienced staff from the homelessness sector to conduct the survey.

They need to be able to engage respectfully with those experiencing homelessness in public spaces, uphold the dignity and confidentiality of those who answer questions, be at least 18, and have strong interpersonal and communication skills. Volunteers need to be capable of walking up to four kilometres during a shift, complete a Vulnerable Sector Check, and follow all health, safety and conduct protocols.

Previous outreach or social services experience is considered an asset, but is not required.

All volunteers will receive training before the count and will be supported by staff, under the direction of the City of Windsor.

Those chosen to conduct the survey will not be paid.

The deadline to apply is September 18, and the Point in Time count will be conducted on October 20, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The housing market continued to slow last month in Windsor-Essex, with sales down 8.55 per cent in August compared to a year ago.

The Windsor Essex County Association of Realtors has released its monthly statistics for August.

The number of properties that changed hands last month was 428, compared to 468 in August 2025.

Housing sales have slipped 5.09 per cent so far this year.

The inventory is also shrinking. Real estate agents put 1,127 properties on the market, compared to 1166 a year ago, a drop of 3.34 per cent. Listings are down 3.26 per cent so far this year.

The average price of a home in the region didn't change much in August, slipping only 0.08 per cent, from $564,428 to $563,971.

So far in 2026, average prices have fallen 2.94 per cent from $573,560 to $556,676.

The Ontario Provincial Police says two men from Essex face charges after a break-in early Monday morning.

Officers were called to a building on Talbot Street North in Essex around 1:20 a.m.

They arrested a 43-year-old man and a 52-year-old man.

The 43-year-old is charged with breaking into a dwelling to commit an indictable offense, wearing a disguise, and failure to comply with a probation order.

The 52-year-old is also charged with breaking into a dwelling and disguise with intent.

The two will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Windsor in November.

Students at a Windsor-Essex public high school may have been seeing double, or triple, when they collected their new class schedules this week.

Class schedules for students at Essex District High School were distributed on Wednesday, but several students contacted the WindsorNewsToday.ca newsroom to say that their schedules didn't look right.

One student reported seeing a single class multiple times on his schedule, along with his girlfriend's, even suggesting that the schedules were created by artificial intelligence (AI).

Another student told WindsorNewsToday.ca that she saw classes on her schedule that she did not elect.

Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) spokesperson Madeline McEachern said that the board does not use AI to create student schedules.

She did suggest that there may have been a computer malfunction.

"If there were any unusual errors [Wednesday], it may be because schedules were released [Wednesday], which is considered the 'first day of school', as staff returned for professional development," said McEachern in an email to WindsorNewsToday.ca. "This overlap caused some errors to occur in our system."

McEachern added that the board is working to address the problem and most issues should be worked out by Thursday. Parents have also been told that schools would contact them to address any issues or conflicts in student schedules.

Classes begin for all students at Windsor-Essex's four publicly funded boards on Tuesday, September 8.

The memory of a key figure in Windsor-Essex's arts scene will remain a vivid one at the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre.

The Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) Foundation and the Windsor Symphony Orchestra hosted a media event on Wednesday that marked the first anniversary of the passing of Maestro Robert Franz, the symphony's longtime music director.

The orchestra will honour Franz's legacy by providing staff and volunteers at the cancer centre with a pair of free tickets to a symphony Masterworks or Pops performance during the 2026-27 season.

WSO Executive Director Patti Lauzon said Franz had wanted to give back to the people who helped him during his cancer treatment.

"One of the things that he talked to me about numerous times last summer, was how important it was for him to make sure that he came back and distributed free tickets to the cancer program staff," said Lauzon.

Franz, who was 57 when he passed and had been the WSO's music director for 12 years, had battled non-Hodgkin Lymphoma twice, having gone into remission once before becoming ill again in the winter of 2025.

Brandon Atkins, Franz's husband, attended the announcement on Wednesday. He said the late maestro would have been proud to see his wish become reality.

"I think that it's just the realization of a goal that he had that he didn't get to see to fruition, and it's a beautiful gift that the WSO has done on his behalf, knowing that it was part of his dying wish that individuals here could get a small thank-you gesture for the work they had done in caring for him at the end of his life," said Atkins."

The symphony has continued its search for Franz's successor.

The WSO's 2026-27 season begins on September 26 with the program "From Paris to Madrid".

Windsor police say a 53-year-old woman is facing charges after a single-vehicle crash late Tuesday night.

Officers responded to the crash at around 11:30 p.m. on the E.C. Row Expressway near the intersection of Central Avenue.

A severely damaged Dodge Charger was found in the ditch on the south side of the westbound lanes. The vehicle broke through a guardrail and went down the embankment near the Central Avenue on-ramp.

The driver sustained minor injuries.

Police detected an alleged odour of alcohol on the driver's breath. She failed a roadside test, along with additional tests at Windsor police headquarters.

She has been charged with driving with excessive blood-alcohol concentration.

The charge has not been proven in court.

Windsor mayoral candidate Drew Dilkens is kicking off his campaign for re-election with a pledge to push the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to upload the cost of maintaining the E.C. Row Expressway.

The province downloaded those costs onto the City of Windsor on April 1, 1997. Since then, the city has spent about $7.5-million annually to maintain, upgrade, and clear snow from the expressway.

"Just imagine what an additional $7.5-million per year could deliver for Windsor's capital plan," said Dilkens. "The fact is, that's a rounding error for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, but a significant opportunity to reprioritize municipal road projects on backlog."

In the past two years, the Ontario government has uploaded responsibility for the Don Valley Parkway in Toronto and Highway 174 in Ottawa.

Despite continued growth across the city and Essex County, is the cost of keeping the E.C. Row driveable is borne solely by Windsor property taxpayers.

"As a matter of basic fairness, we should expect the Government of Ontario to immediately begin discussions to upload E.C. Row," said Dilkens. "This was never a cost that should have been transferred to local government. I plan to take this fight directly to the Premier and Cabinet, and expect them to listen and deliver."

Dilkens is running against ten other candidates for mayor in this October's municipal election. They are: Benjamin Danyluk, Aaron Day, current Ward 1 councillor Fred Francis, Dylon Graves, Tara Grayer, Nick Kolasky, Tristan Ty Morencie, Kat Pasquach, Patrick Sutherland, and Louis Vaupotic.

Two firefighters were among three people injured in a house fire in downtown Windsor.

Windsor Fire and Rescue says crews were called to Vera Place, near Church Street, shortly before 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Fire officials determined the incident began with a grease fire that got out of hand.

Three people, including a tenant and two firefighters, suffered minor injuries.

Fire officials say three people living in the house have been displaced, and the fire caused $450,000 in damage.

Windsor Fire and Rescue has used this incident to remind people to be careful while cooking.

"When cooking with grease, have a lid close by. Do not move a pan on fire and pay attention when cooking," read a social media post from Windsor Fire.

Once again, the Bank of Canada is holding its key interest rate, the overnight rate, steady at 2.25 per cent.

The bank rate is 2.5 per cent, and the deposit rate is 2.2 per cent.

The Bank hasn't adjusted interest rates since October 2025, and rationalized its announcement on Wednesday morning by pointing to the ongoing war in Iran, which continues to keep energy prices high, new American tariffs on Canadian goods, and the breakdown of trade talks between the two countries.

Canadian economic activity strengthened in the second quarter as real Gross Domestic Product grew by 3.3 per cent, following weak growth in the first. Consumption has seen solid gains; there was some growth in the housing supply, and exports and business development are up sharply. Labour market conditions are improving, and unemployment was 6.4 per cent in July. However, demand for labour is still subdued, and there are indications of excess supply in the economy.

Indicators reaffirm the bank's Governing Council's view that the economy is recovering, but uncertainty remains high with new U.S. tariffs.

Inflation is still hovering around three per cent in recent months. The Bank blames higher gas prices and said that if oil prices remain high, that could spill over into the cost of other goods and services.

It also cautions that Canada's counter-tariffs, set to take effect on Tuesday, will also raise costs for businesses.

American economic growth remains solid, driven by consumer spending and investments in Artificial Intelligence. The economy in the Euro area was stronger than expected, and China's economy slowed.

Overall, the Bank believes the global economy has shown resilience despite geopolitical headwinds.

The Bank will make its next policy rate announcement on October 28.

For the third year, the Windsor and District Labour Council will host its Labour Day celebration at Lanspeary Park on Monday.

Before the family-friendly event, the council will host its annual Labour Day Parade from the Unifor Hall on Turner Road to the park on Ottawa Street.

The parade, featuring union locals from across the region, will leave the union hall at 10 a.m. and arrive at Lanspeary Park an hour later.

Mario Spagnuolo, the acting president of the labour council, said this year's theme is "Workers Together, Defending Local Jobs." He said the importance of defending the rights of workers is ever more important amid Canada's trade war with the U.S.

At the park, those who go can enjoy food, drink, bouncy castles, a free swim, a tug-of-war competition, and live entertainment from British Beat 66.

Two men are facing multiple charges after shots were fired Monday night in downtown Windsor.

Police responded to a report of someone with a firearm at around 10 p.m. on Victoria Avenue near Wyandotte Street West.

Investigators learned that two people earlier got into an argument over money on the corner of Wyandotte West and Dougall Avenue. One of them pulled out a weapon. The second man grabbed it and fired, causing the first man to run away.

The gun was recovered nearby, and the two men were soon identified and arrested.

No one was hurt.

A 41-year-old man and a 32-year-old man are both charged with possession of a firearm without a licence, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a loaded firearm, possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of a weapon with an altered serial number, and possession of a firearm while prohibited.

The 41-year-old is also charged with two counts of uttering threats, and four counts of breach of probation.

The 32-year-old is also charged with discharging a weapon without regard to safety, and failure to comply with a release order.

The charges have not been proven in court.

Windsor police say a 50-year-old man has turned himself in following an alleged sexual assault on a 12-year-old boy.

On Friday evening, officers received a report of a sexual assault that occurred earlier that day.

The victim told police that he was fishing at a park in the Ducharme Street and Manzanillo Crescent area when he was approached by an unknown man who allegedly touched him inappropriately and made suggestive comments. The suspect then left the area on a bicycle. The boy was able to get away and tell his family.

Police say 50-year-old Amar Singh surrendered at Windsor police headquarters on Monday.

He is charged with sexual assault and sexual interference with a person under 16 years of age.

The charges have not been proven in court.

Talks have officially begun in the final installment of this year's Canadian auto industry bargaining.

Contract talks formally began Tuesday morning in Toronto between Stellantis and Unifor. The traditional pre-talk handshake kicked things off.

Unifor Local 444 President John Stewart, whose local represents 6,000 employees at the Windsor Assembly Plant, will act as the Master Bargaining Committee Chair.

Stewart told reporters at an early afternoon news conference that this round of talks is being conducted under a veil of uncertainty due to U.S. tariffs.

"We open talks with our members' needs in mind," said Stewart. "It should come as no surprise that they are very anxious. They are concerned about what the future holds for their jobs, for their workplaces, and for their families."

Among the issues to be discussed are the future of the Brampton Assembly Plant, where 2,200 workers have been idled after production of the Jeep Compass was shifted out of Canada.

Production volumes in Windsor and at the Etobicoke Casting Plant are also on the table. Unifor National President Lana Payne said she was pleased with the success of talks with Ford and General Motors, but the talks with Stellantis reflect a change in the game rules. The objective, she said, was to keep Canada an auto-making country.

"I've been calling the current economic situation exactly what it is, an existential crisis for our auto industry," said Payne. "After all, the most powerful leader in the world has said that he does not want us building cars, or trucks, or anything."

Stellantis Canada CEO Trevor Longley said that the automaker's bargaining team is ready for productive discussions, with a fair agreement the goal.

"As the automotive industry continues to navigate significant economic, trade, and competitive pressures, our goal is to reach an agreement that recognizes the contributions of our employees while helping ensure our Canadian operations remain competitive," said Longley in a statement. "We look forward to constructive discussions in the weeks ahead."

Longley added that the company has invested $8-billion across its Canadian operations, including Windsor Assembly and the NextStar battery plant in Windsor.

The union has set a deadline of Friday, September 11, though the contract with Stellantis expires on September 20. Payne said she was confident, though, that a deal could be reached before the 11th.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) was busy during the third week of August at two of Windsor's three border crossings.

Between August 18 and 23, CBSA agents at the Ambassador Bridge and the new Gordie Howe International Bridge (GHIB) stopped four American residents and confiscated assorted weapons, ammunition, and cannabis products.

On Tuesday, August 18, a prohibited firearm, a magazine, and six rounds of ammunition were seized at the GHIB. Officers arrested the U.S. citizen and fined them $1,000.

Two incidents occurred on Saturday, August 22, at the GHIB. In the first, a restricted firearm, a prohibited firearm, and two magazines were seized. The U.S. resident was arrested and fined $2,500.

In the second incident, agents confiscated two prohibited firearms, 948 rounds of ammunition, a magazine, a prohibited crossbow, and 16 cans of cannabis-infused beverages. The U.S. resident was arrested and fined $3,000.

Finally, CBSA agents at the Ambassador Bridge seized a prohibited firearm on Sunday, August 23. The traveller was arrested and fined $1,000.

The CBSA said that within seven days, a total of 15 illegally imported firearms, over a thousand rounds of ammunition, and 12 magazines were confiscated from American residents at points of entry in Windsor, Fort Erie, and Niagara Falls.

Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital hopes to treat more patients with Treatment Resistant Depression thanks to a funding boost from the provincial government.

Back in early 2024, the HDGH Foundation and the hospital funded a state-of-the-art BrainsWay Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation machine. It uses magnetic pulses to stimulate targeted areas of the brain.

Over the past two years, it's treated 38 patients with Treatment Resistant Depression through its Neuromodulation Program. The program also offers electroconvulsive Treatment.

The funding from the Ontario government will support rTMS programs at 15 sites across the province. It'll buy another 18 rTMS devices to help up to 2,250 patients a year.

Patients need to be referred to the local program by a doctor, nurse practitioner, or psychiatrist.

Among the Windsor Police officers who will be honoured at the upcoming Chief's Gala are three Constables who rescued occupants from two burning vehicles.

Constables Joshua Allen, Eduardo Arevalo, and Wayne Bridge responded to a crash on Tecumseh Road East at McDougall Avenue and will receive the Senior Constable John Atkinson Memorial Award on October 1.

The inaugural Chief's Gala at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts was announced earlier this month to raise money for Camp Brombal and the Canadian Mental Health Association Windsor-Essex County Branch, and recognize officers who demonstrated excellence on the job.

The Award of Excellence for Policing will go to Sergeant Charles Sasso and Constables Paco Boutros-Gebrael, Jordyn Naumovski, Jacob Polski, and Emily Stevenson after they found a missing person suffering from hypothermia in a ditch and transported him to the hospital.

Officers who conducted a cross-border investigation into a violent home invasion and sexual assault of a child will receive the Award of Excellence for Criminal Investigation. Staff Sergeant Dave Tennant, Sergeants James Gendreau and Jeff Pocock, and Constables Bethany Bondy, Rob Hanna, Larry Hartley, Phil Peladeau, and Sean Richardon will be honoured for their role in the arrest of the suspect in Michigan.

The Award of Excellence for Community Service will go to Sergeant Adam Young, retired Constable Bonnie Dominey, and Melanie Kish-Lewis. They coordinated the Windsor Police Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of Special Olympics.

The Alton C Parker Award is being awarded to Constable Cealia Gagnon for more than 20 years of exceptional community service as a mentor to Special Olympics athletes and as a volunteer with local charities.

Nicole Sbrocca, the CEO of the Canadian Mental Health Association Windsor-Essex County Branch, will receive the Award of Excellence for Support Services.

And the Award of Excellence for Innovation goes to retired Windsor Police Chief Jason Bellaire; President and CEO of Erie Shores Healthcare and Windsor Regional Hospital, Kristin Kennedy; President and CEO of Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare, Bill Marra; and former Windsor Regional Hospital CEO and President David Musyj. They are being recognized for creating the Nurse Police Team and Crisis Response Teams.

Expect a crowd outside Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore MP Kathy Borrelli's constituency office on Tecumseh Road East on Tuesday.

Starting at 1 p.m., demonstrators will demand Ottawa uphold the Canada Health Act and push Borrelli to take their concerns to the federal government.

The demonstration is one of many across Canada today as part of a nationwide day of action organized by the Canada Health Coalition.

Alberta's Bill 11 comes into effect on Tuesday, allowing doctors to accept payment from patients who don't want to wait for treatment on a waiting list. They say the legislation is clear that provincial and territorial health plans must be delivered on a non-profit basis by a public authority.

"Forty years ago, on April 17, 1984, the Canada Health Act was passed unanimously into law, guaranteeing every Canadian access to health care, regardless of income," read a release from the Windsor-Essex Health Coalition. "Health coalitions warn this is a direct violation of the Canada Health Act and if left unchallenged in Alberta, it will spread province to province."

On Saturday, the local health coalition held a similar protest outside Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie's office against private clinics that are allowed to operate in Ontario. It alleges that patients at private clinics offering diagnostic tests, cataract surgeries and other procedures are being charged user fees.

Family and friends have become increasingly concerned about the fate of a 33-year-old man who grew up in Windsor-Essex.

According to multiple social media posts from friends and extended family, Ishan Patel has been missing since the August 26 flash floods that submerged a section of the Nepal-Tibet border.

Patel previously lived in LaSalle and attended Sandwich Secondary School. He moved to the U.S. to pursue further education at Wayne State University in Detroit. He and his wife, Akansha, 32, are now U.S. citizens.

The day of the flooding was Patel’s birthday.

Various social media posts say that the couple was part of a tour group visiting Himalayan glaciers. They were last seen at a hotel in the Nepalese district of Rasuwa at about 7:30 a.m. local time, or 5:45 p.m. Eastern time, on August 25.

Other missing family members include Ishan's mother, Shilpa Patel, 59, and father-in-law, Umeshkumar Patel, 56.

The BBC reported on Monday evening that at least 939 people are dead in Nepal after flash floods hit a stretch of area along the Nepal-Tibet border, and over 4,200 people are missing. Chinese state media also reported 16 dead in Tibet and at least 546 missing.

The U.S. Geological Survey stated that the flash flood was the result of a glacier collapse.

Anyone with information on the family's whereabouts should contact the Canadian Consulate in Kathmandu, Nepal, or Global Affairs Canada, at the phone numbers listed on the missing person poster.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers arrested a pair of suspected impaired drivers within about one hour over the weekend.

Both arrests were within the Municipality of Lakeshore.

The first arrest was shortly after 10:15 p.m. on Friday. OPP officers responded to a complaint about a vehicle and stopped it on County Road 22 near West Puce Road.

A 44-year-old Stoney Point woman has been charged with impaired driving, driving with excessive blood-alcohol concentration, and driving with alcohol readily available.

The second incident took place at approximately 11:20 p.m. on County Road 27 near Baseline Road. Officers conducted a traffic stop.

A 32-year-old Woodslee woman has been charged with impaired driving, driving with excessive blood-alcohol concentration, driving with alcohol readily available, and driving with cannabis readily available.

Both drivers have had their licences suspended for 90 days, and their vehicles impounded for seven days.

The charges have not been proven in court. Both suspects will have a chance to respond to the counts in a Windsor court on October 9.

Investigators are urging residents to come forward with tips after two people were attacked by a noxious substance in Windsor over the weekend.

Windsor police say a man and a woman were attacked at around 10:45 p.m. Saturday on Windemere Road near Vimy Avenue in south Walkerville.

The victims told police that they were walking southbound when they heard someone approaching them from behind. When they stopped at the intersection of Windemere and Vimy, the suspect allegedly sprayed bear mace in their direction, then fled the scene.

The victims were treated at the scene by paramedics.

The suspect is described as a White male, about 20 years old, 5' 10", and 170 lbs., with shoulder-length curly dark hair. He was wearing a white shirt, dark pants, and a backpack.

Residents and business owners in the area of Windermere and Vimy have been asked to check any dashcam or surveillance footage from between 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Windsor police are looking for a man who may have ripped a local man off for over $100,000.

Members of the Financial Crimes Unit received a complaint last month about possible identity theft and fraud.

The victim told investigators that someone opened a fraudulent bank account in the victim's name in June, and ended up incurring a debt of $101,315.

The suspect is described as an East Indian male with tattoos on the right side of his neck and the back of his left hand.

In surveillance images provided by Windsor police, he is frequently seen with the lower portion of his face covered by a scarf or mask.

He is wanted for fraud over $5,000, identity fraud, identity theft, possession of a stolen credit card, improper use of credit card data, and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

Police have urged the suspect to turn himself in.

Windsor-Essex is under a yellow warning for heat, and now a heat warning from the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Mehdi Aloosh issued the warning on Monday morning. It will expire on Wednesday.

A heat warning is issued any time when two or more consecutive days are expected to have daytime highs of at least 31 C, and overnight lows equal to or greater than 21 C, or a humidex of 42 C or higher.

Symptoms of heat-related illness can include dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness, and confusion. Anyone experiencing those symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

The health unit recommends drinking water even if you don't feel thirsty, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, and wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. It also suggests leaving outdoor activities until the coolest part of the day.

Everyone is at risk of heat-related illness, but older adults, babies and young children, those with medical conditions, and those who work outside are at greater risk.

On Tuesday, Unifor will begin contract talks with the last of the Detroit Big 3, Stellantis.

The union announced the start of talks on Monday morning, just after its members at General Motors ratified their new three-year deal.

Talks with Stellantis are expected to follow the bargaining pattern set in contract negotiations with Ford and General Motors.

The opening session with Stellantis will also be at the Sheraton Centre in downtown Toronto.

Unifor Local 444 President James Stewart says one of the biggest challenges in talks is the trade war with the U.S.

"We are under attack," said Stewart. "That makes it difficult to achieve the pattern. That makes it difficult getting investments."

Stewart would like to see investments in the Windsor Assembly Plant.

"There's all kinds of possibilities," he said. "Something we can solidify the third shift for the long term. There's room there for investments."

He says talks will also focus on the long-term viability of the Brampton Assembly Plant and the Etobicoke Casting Plant.

Unifor represents about 6,000 workers at the Windsor Assembly Plant.

The contract with Stellantis expires on September 20.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate after a fatal crash in Windsor on Sunday.

Windsor Police attempted to pull over a vehicle near St. Luke Road and Seminole Street, but the vehicle didn't stop and collided with several vehicles nearby.

One person was pronounced dead.

Officers shut down Seminole Street between Walker Road and Albert Road, and St. Luke Road between Reginald Street and Metcalfe Street to investigate. Drivers are asked to avoid the area and use an alternate route.

Now that the SIU has invoked its mandate, Windsor Police will not release other details about the crash.

Most systems are functioning again at five hospitals in Southwestern Ontario after a critical technology malfunction on Saturday morning.

The hospitals, Erie Shores Healthcare, Windsor Regional Hospital, Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare, and Bluewater Health in Sarnia, say it wasn't a hack, and the TransForm Shared Service Organization called it "an extremely rare event."

It caused delays in processing for patient care, including diagnostic imaging.

The vendor is working with technical teams from TransForm to restore all systems, but as of Sunday morning, 80 per cent of impacted systems were restored.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and the not-for-profit organization ChildCan is ensuring that help is there for families who need it during extremely difficult times.

Childhood cancer is the number one cause of death by disease of Canadian children, with the incidence rate of childhood cancer in Ontario increasing by approximately 1 per cent each year, according to data from ChildCan from 1986-2018.

Amy Mathias, Community Engagement and Communications Associate with ChildCan, says there will be many flag raising events across Ontario tomorrow, as well as events throughout the month, including Childcan Pyjama Walks. Mathias says those are very symbolic and are meant to be in solidarity with the kids going through treatment.

"We encourage people to stay in their pyjamas, we call it the ChildCan Pyjama Walk, so that people are in solidarity with the kids who rarely get out of their pyjamas during treatment," Mathias explained. "Childhood cancer treatment is not day surgery. We're talking anywhere from six weeks to three years of treatment, and during that time pyjamas are extremely comfortable for these kids."

Mathias says Childcan is there to help families with many supports, including covering travel and other costs to places like London Health Sciences Centre, where many childhood cancer treatments occur.

"Immediately on diagnosis, ChildCan is there with parking passes for the entire length of the child's treatment, which, as I mentioned, could be anywhere up to three years. So they get to keep that parking pass for the duration of their stay, and that saves a huge fortune right off the bat," she said. "We also help with other incurred costs, whether it be groceries, gas costs, utilities, bills, mortgage payments, those bills don't stop. But for a lot of parents, one of them if not sometimes both of them has to give up their jobs in order to look after their sick child for the months that they're in the hospital."

A gold ribbon is the internationally recognized awareness symbol for all forms of childhood cancer.

"Gold is a precious metal, just as children are our most precious treasure. We are deeply thankful to the municipalities across Southwestern Ontario that are glowing gold, raising flags, and officially recognizing September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month," added Suzanne Fratschko Elliott, Executive Director at Childcan. "These actions speak volumes about the importance of standing with our children and their families. Unifor members at General Motors have ratified a new three-year contract, which includes more than $1-billion in investments in Canadian operations.

Negotiations took place under challenging circumstances, amid a trade war with the U.S., and with workers at CAMI Assembly in Ingersoll on indefinite layoff.

"These agreements commit more than $1-billion in vital investments to Canadian GM facilities, with a new single-source next-generation transition at the St. Catharines Propulsion Plant and the return of next-generation heavy-duty GMC Sierra production to Oshawa," said National President Lana Payne. "GM is making these investments in both its highly-skilled Canadian workforce and facilities at a crucial time, as our domestic auto industry is under siege by the Trump Administration."

The union continued to push for production to return to the plant. GM committed to seeking opportunities for the Ingersoll facility, and designated it the plant of first consideration for defence work for the Canadian Armed Forces, should the work be awarded to the company.

The contract will award the workers a three per cent annual wage increase and better benefits.

Unifor members at CAMI Assembly voted 96.5 per cent in favour of the deal, while workers at facilities in Oshawa and St. Catharines voted 80.5 per cent in favour.

Now that Unifor has successfully ratified contracts at both Ford and General Motors, it will move on to talks with Stellantis next.

There's no proposal on the table to build a high-density data centre in Essex County at the moment, but Kingsville's Deputy Mayor thinks Essex County should be prepared for the eventuality that a developer proposes one.

The public has raised questions about the environmental impacts of data centres and their effect on water and hydro bills, and councillors confess they have a lot of questions too. De Yong hopes the study, up for debate on Wednesday evening, will provide some answers.

"At this time, municipalities don't have a planning framework to deal with any applications," said De Yong. "A study will allow municipalities to put any moratoriums on any current applications should they choose to, and it'll also provide recommendations for planning and land use policies."

Specifically, De Yong's motion calls for a study that will assess the regulatory framework needed to approve or deny data centres, investigate any existing small data centres in the region, and examine any existing studies.

De Yong admitted the issue has caught the imagination of the public. In Essex, Mayor Sherry Bondy recently told WindsorNewsToday.ca she had received in excess of 200 emails about data centres.

It was at a recent Federation of Canadian Municipalities meeting that De Yong realized the clock is ticking for Essex County to act.

"I sat at a table with the Hamilton councillor for Ward 3, which was dealing with it at that time. She was sharing her experience, and I realized Essex County needs to get ahead of this," she said.

Meanwhile, the Province of Ontario is proposing a new framework for data centres seeking to connect to the electricity grid. Under it, data centre projects will need approval from the Ministry of Energy and Mines. The legislation was introduced in June, and the public has until September 12 to comment.

The province is expected to publish a provincial regulatory framework by year's end. De Yong would like to see more in the legislation giving municipalities the right to say no.

"They have to recognize that municipalities must be offered a right of refusal prior to anyone getting approval to connect to a grid," said De Yong. "Giving municipalities control over whether they want these things in their community or not."

The Town of Essex will vote on a year-long moratorium on data centres at its next council meeting on September 8.

The data centre sector is forecasted to represent 13 per cent of new electricity demand in Ontario by 2035.

The Municipality of Leamington will join other Windsor-Essex communities in hosting free night markets during the summer.

Waterfront Market Nights will take place at the new Waterfront Market Plaza on Friday, September 11, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Windsor police are asking for the public's help in finding two suspects after a man was injured.

At around 8 a.m. on August 8, police were called to a report of an assault that took place the night before.

According to investigators, a man was leaving a business on Seminole Street when he was hit from behind by an unknown man and fell to the ground.

Two men then allegedly continued punching and kicking the man before the victim reportedly hit the curb and lost consciousness.

Officers say one of the suspects took the victim's phone before they fled the area.

The victim had non-life-threatening injuries.

Windsor police are looking for two white men, around 6 feet tall, and around 25 to 30 years old.

The first suspect has brown hair and a moustache. The second suspect has a shaved head, a full beard, and several arm tattoos.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Windsor Police Service Major Crimes Unit.

A fire has been deemed "suspicious by nature" by the Windsor Fire and Rescue Services (WFRS).

The fire investigation began at around 2 a.m. Saturday morning.

Investigators say it was an exterior fire that spread into a home on Bloomfield Road, causing $100,000 in damages.

Transit Windsor will start operating out of its new East End Terminal on September 6, 2026.

The new terminal is located on the corner of Tecumseh Road East and Lauzon Parkway. It will replace the transit terminal at Tecumseh Mall.

Arrival and departure times at the East End Terminal will stay the same from those previously used at the Tecumseh Mall terminal.

"As transit services move from the Tecumseh Mall Terminal to the new East End Terminal, Transit Windsor has worked diligently to ensure a smooth and seamless transition for our riders. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding motorists to exercise caution as the majority of Ontario students will return to school next week.

Most school districts will welcome students back on September 8, which police say will result in increased traffic volumes near schools, bus stops, and pedestrian crossings.

Motorists are urged to slow down and stay alert as school zones become busier during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times. Drivers are also reminded that they should be prepared to stop when approaching a school bus displaying flashing amber lights.

OPP say once a school bus has stopped and its red overhead lights are flashing, drivers are required by law to stop and remain until the lights are no longer flashing and the stop arm has been withdrawn. On roads without a physical median, traffic must stop in both directions.

"Whether travelling by vehicle, bicycle, school bus, or on foot, everyone has a responsibility to help keep children safe," read a release from the OPP Media Service.

A Windsor police officer and a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer have been injured following a dangerous driving incident.

On Friday, police were called to the Ambassador Bridge after a man failed to stop at the border inspection lanes.

Officers spoke with the driver before he reportedly became combative and drove off at high speed, injuring both officers. The driver then allegedly hit several barriers and flipped over before running away.

Police arrested the 32-year-old man without further incident. He has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, obstructing a peace officer, and assaulting a peace officer with a weapon.

The officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Windsor Police Service County Crimes Unit.

Windsor police are asking for the public's help in finding a suspect following the sexual assault of a 12-year-old boy.

Shortly after 6:00 p.m. on August 27, officers received a report of a sexual assault that occurred earlier that day.

The victim was fishing at a park in the Ducharme Street and Manzanillo Crescent area at 5:30 p.m. when he was approached by an unknown man who allegedly touched him inappropriately and made suggestive comments. The suspect then left the area on a bicycle.

The victim fled the area and notified his family, who then contacted police.

The suspect is described as an East Indian man, between the ages of 40 and 50 years old, with a black beard containing grey or white hair around the sides and neck.

At the time of the incident, he was wearing an orange turban, a white short-sleeved shirt, dark green or brown pants and black shoes while riding a teal-coloured mountain bike.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the Windsor Police Service at 519-258-6111.

With school set to start in just over a week, the Alliance for Trans Youth is hosting Windsor's third annual Trans March on Sunday.

The Alliance for Trans Youth is a coalition of activists advocating for the rights and safety of transgender youth. It is organizing against ongoing attacks on the rights of trans youth in Canada and the United States.

"In both countries, queer and trans children's well-being is consistently being threatened by bills and laws that inhibit their rights to privacy and personal safety, restrict access to gender-affirming care, and censor vital information regarding trans-inclusivity, education and experiences," said a release from the Alliance. "The past few years have seen a dramatic increase in anti-trans legislation being introduced, with 833 bills under consideration in American federal or state legislatures alone."

The Alliance said the risk exists at home too for trans youth.

"The Greater Essex County District School Board has faced immense backlash for upholding policies intended to protect its queer and trans students from bullying and abuse," continued the release. "Local organizations, such as the Christian Heritage Party... have proliferated messages opposing life-saving policies intended to protect queer and trans people from discrimination and provide them with adequate and life-saving access to transition-related care."

Organizers hope the march will serve as a powerful reminder of their mission to protect queer and trans youth.

"As we embark on a new school year, this march demonstrates the collective strength and steadfastness of the many people prepared to continue defending the rights and safety of queer and trans youth in our city," said the Alliance.

Participants will gather under the Great Canadian Flag at Dieppe Gardens in Windsor at 1 p.m. and march through downtown Windsor.

The Town of LaSalle is hosting a travelling exhibit showcasing Canada's role in Belgium during the First World War.

Fighting in Flanders - Gas. Mud. Memory. is travelling across Canada from the Canadian War Museum and will be at the LaSalle Civic Centre from September 8 to November 14.

"This travelling exhibition offers a meaningful opportunity for residents of all ages to connect with an important chapter in Canadian history," said LaSalle Mayor Crystal Meloche.

The exhibit is a documentation of the Canadian experience in Belgium, presented in a series of four panels. The panels contain photos, personal testimonies, and reproductions of art. It covers the invasion of Belgium in 1914, the Battle of Ypres in 1915, and the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917.

"From the first use of deadly chlorine gas in the Second Battle of Ypres to the treacherous mud of Passchendaele, Canadian soldiers faced horrific new weapons and unimaginable conditions of the battlefield," said Director General of the Canadian War Museum, James Whitham. "This exhibition showcases the Canadian experiences in Belgium, and the impact these had on Canadian lives."

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were busy overnight Thursday into Friday, arresting two drivers for various offences.

Within about four hours, officers responded to incidents in Leamington and Tecumseh.

The first arrest was recorded just before 10 p.m. on Thursday. Patrol officers responded to a traffic complaint about a driver who was stopped on Riverside Drive East near Catalina Cove in Tecumseh.

A 21-year-old Windsor woman has been charged with driving with an excessive blood-alcohol concentration.

The driver's licence was suspended for 90 days, and their vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The second was shortly after 2 a.m. on Friday. Officers conducted a traffic stop on Talbot Street West in Leamington.

A 39-year-old Leamington woman has been charged with driving while suspended, improper driving on lane or shoulder, driving without a proper rear light, and driving without a validated permit.

Her vehicle was also impounded for seven days.

The charges against either driver have yet to be proven in court.

Windsor police say three people have been charged and suspected fentanyl has been taken off the streets.

Members of the Drugs and Guns (DIGS) Unit began an investigation last month into potential drug trafficking.

Officers from the Emergency Services Unit executed a raid late Thursday night at a house on Longfellow Avenue near Beals Street West. The three men inside the house were arrested.

A search of the house uncovered 123.2 grams of fentanyl, plus eight cellphones, drug packaging materials, and a digital scale.

The men, aged 38, 31, and 27, are each charged with possession of fentanyl with intent to sell.

The 31-year-old was also charged with three counts of failure to comply with a release order.

The charges have not been proven in court.

Windsor police dealt with what was called an "active investigation" at a border crossing on Friday afternoon.

Few details have been released, but officers responded to the Canadian point of entry at the Ambassador Bridge at around 3:30 p.m.

One person has been arrested.

Police say there is no threat to public safety.

According to estimates on border wait times provided by the Canada Border Services Agency, the wait time to enter Canada for commercial vehicles was at least one hour and 15 minutes as of 8 p.m. Friday. Personal vehicle traffic was back to normal.

Commuters were also urged to enter Canada via the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel or the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
