Now that the good weather is here, some of us can't wait to get out on the waterways, but the Ontario Provincial Police have some reminders to keep us safe.
The first tip is to make sure you have the proper safety equipment. Over the past decade, 86 per cent of fatalities and boating collisions were because boaters didn't have what they needed to stay safe.
Everyone onboard needs a properly fitting and approved life jacket. Personal floatation devices are a must.
Most accidents were on a Saturday, and 92 per cent of the victims were men.
Did you know 40 per cent of those fatalities happened when a boat capsized? Another 40 per cent were because someone fell overboard.
Essex County OPP will patrol waterways to ensure boating laws are obeyed.
Police will check to see that all passengers are wearing a life jacket.
The boating community is also reminded the penalties for driving impaired are the same whether you drive a boat or a car. Police have zero tolerance for impaired driving.
