Federal Programs To Buffer TPP Impact On Farmers

The federal government has released details of a number of programs officials say will buffer the supply-managed sector from the impact of the Trans Pacific Partnership.

The Income Guarantee Program will provide 100 per cent income protection to producers for 10 years from the day TPP comes into force.

It will continue on a tapered basis for another five years after that.

The government is budgeting 2 point 4 billion dollars for that program.

The government says the Quota Value Guarantee Program will protect producers against reduction in quota value when the quota is sold following implementation of the TPP.

1 point 5 billion dollars has been set aside for that one.

The government is also creating a Processor Modernization Program to help processors in the supply-managed sectors advance their competitiveness and growth.

And a 15 million dollar initiative has been set up to help supply managed groups promote and market their products.

According to the government, the deal includes limited new access to the Canadian market for supply-managed products.

That includes 3 point 25 per cent for dairy, 2 point 3 per cent for eggs, 2 point 1 per cent for chicken, 2 per cent for turkey and 1 point 5 per cent for broiler hatching eggs.
