City Backing Memorial Cup Bid

The Windsor Spitfires and City of Windsor are looking to drum up community support ahead of a bid to host the CHL's 2017 Memorial Cup tournament.

Unveilled Thursday were two "larger than life" jerseys, and Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens was the first to sign them.

"We're going to have them at Spitfire games, try and get the community to sign the jerseys," says Dilkens. "We'll take them out to some schools as well and get students to sign the jerseys. The whole idea here is to get the community energized."

Dilkens explains that the economic impact of hosting the Memorial Cup tournament can be up to $14-million, as that was London's experience in 2014.

Street banners are also expected to go up in Windsor over the next few weeks, as the city is spending $30,000 in its efforts to gain community support for this event.

The Windsor Spitfires' bid presentation is set for April 18.
