The former head football coach at the University of Michigan will face a variety of charges following a bizarre chain of events this week.
Sherrone Moore appeared in an Ann Arbor courtroom on Friday afternoon, to be arraigned for third-degree felony home invasion, stalking, and break-and-enter. The latter two charges are misdemeanors.
The Detroit Free Press reports that the 39-year-old Moore, who is married with three children, was fired by the university on Wednesday after it learned about an alleged "inappropriate relationship" with a staff member.
A Washtenaw County magistrate ordered a $25,000 U.S. cash surety bond, required Moore to wear a GPS device, avoid any contact with the alleged victim, and continue any mental health treatment.
Pittsfield Township police reported that officers responded to an address on Wednesday afternoon, following an assault complaint. Moore was arrested in a church parking lot.
The charges have yet to be proven in court.
If found guilty on all charges, Moore could face up to five years in prison and fines of up to $3,500 U.S.
The paper reported, citing an anonymous source, that Moore had been the subject of a university investigation in October, which "checked out". However, as rumours about an inappropriate relationship persisted, U of M brought in a third party.
Moore had been a rising star in the college football world. He played for Oklahoma and had assistant coaching jobs at Louisville and Central Michigan before joining Jim Harbaugh's staff at Michigan in 2018. He served as tight ends coach, offensive line coach, and eventually offensive coordinator.
He became Michigan's first Black head football coach when Harbaugh left for the NFL's Los Angeles Chargers in January 2024, soon after the Wolverines won their first national championship since 1997. He compiled a 16-8 record, including a 1-1 record against archrival Ohio State, a 2-0 record against Michigan State, and a win in the 2025 ReliaQuest Bowl.
The football team is preparing to face Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year's Eve in Orlando. Assistant coach Biff Poggi is serving as interim head coach until U of M finds a permanent replacement.
