The federal government is giving the Canadian Fertilizer Institute 1 point 1 million dollars.
The money is targeted at finding ways to improve the efficient use of fertilizer while reducing the environment impacts and input costs.
Some of it will go towards the Institutes 4R Nutrient Stewardship research network.
That cross-country network will work on a three-year project to develop and test best management practices and support systems for fertilizer use tailored to Canadian soils, climates and cropping systems.
CFI Acting President Clyde Graham says this research will demonstrate that 4R Nutrient Stewardship is good for the farm economy - and the environment.
