East Perth has developed a program to reduce farm-related fire losses.
Fire Chief Bill Hunter says farm-related fires caused over 8 million dollars in losses in Perth East between 2010 and 2014.
They got help from a number of insurance companies to create their Building a Farm Fire Safe Community Program.
It includes a number of on-line tools, including a self-assessment a farmer can use to evaluate his own property.
Hunter says once the assessment is done, fire officials will come to the farm at no charge to help farmers develop fire safety measures that fit their specific operation.
While the program was set up by Perth East, it's also being offered in West Perth and part of South Perth.
Hunter says it's also free for any other fire department or organisation to pick up on to help reduce farm-related fire losses in their areas.
While it's a benefit to farmers to help reduce those losses, Hunter points out it can also reduce the dangers firefighters face in battling those farm-related fires.
