Concerns About U-S Pork In Cold Storage

U-S pork cutout and negotiated carcass prices were up last week from the previous week.

The cutout price was up 2.75, the carcass price 86 cents.

However, the University of Missouri's Hog Outlook reports the cutout price was almost 47 dollars lower than a year ago while the carcass price was 46.24 lower on the year.

The University's Ron Plain says last week's 2 point 184 million head slaughter was down 2 point 6 per cent from the week before but up almost 10 per cent from the same week last year.

So far this year, U-S hog slaughter is up 5 point 5 per cent, pork production up 5 point 8 per cent.

Plain reports there were 669 million pounds of pork in cold storage in the U-S the end of March.

That's the third most for any month.

But it's down 2 point 6 per cent from February.

The University of Missouri economist sees that as encouraging - suggesting the backlog at west coast docks caused by labour issues earlier this year is being worked down.
