EU Commission Okays New Biotech Soybean Products

Another bit of news out of Europe that could have an impact on this country's soybean sector.

The European Commission has approved ten new biotechnology products for food and feed use - including 4 soybean events.

Soy Canada Executive Director Jim Everson says that's good news for Canada's soybean sector.

However, Everson says it remains unclear whether European Union member states will allow access to the products the commission has approved.

That's because the European Commission is proposing to change the rules to allow member states to make their own decisions on how they handle crop biotechnology imports.

That would be a change from the current system where member states are obligated to follow the lead of the Commission.

Soy Canada Chair Mark Huston is encouraging the European Commission to maintain it's current single, E-U wide approval process.
