Ontario Corn Growers Keeping Pace With U-S Counterparts

OMAFRA estimates corn planting in Central Ontario is about 75 per cent completed.

That includes this part of the province.

Soybeans are estimated at between 10 and 20 per cent planted.

However, the Ministry's Brian Hall warns this past week's warm weather has also accelerated the emergence of insect pests in crops.

Ministry agrologists are also seeing additional acres of winter wheat being taken out of production because of declining plant survival.

Overall loss of wheat acres has been estimated at between 10 and 15 per cent - depending on the area.

At least some of those acres appear to be switching to corn, and that's increasing demand for additional corn seed in parts of the region.
