George Morris Name To Live On At OAC

The George Morris Centre is no more.

But the name - and the vision - will carry on.

The Ontario Agricultural College is going to use the 450 thousand dollars it received from the Centre's assets to create a research grant and student scholarship.

The George Morris Agriculture and Food Policy Research Grant will support a visiting researcher in the University's Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics on work relevant to Ontario or Canadian agricultural policy issues.

The George Morris Graduate Student Scholarship, worth 10 thousand dollars, will be available to department students interested in policy-related research.

Bob Funk is chair of the George Morris Centre's board.

He says they were determined to maintain Morris' vision for independent analysis of agri-food policy.

George Morris was a farmer and agri-food leader who joined with the University of Guelph to create the centre in 1990.

It became an independent corporation in 1998.

The George Morris Centre ceased operations at the end of 2014.
