A recent report for Middlesex County suggests the municipality needs to look beyond further processing and high-value crops with it's agriculture strategy.
The report was done by Synthesis Agri-Food Network out of Guelph.
According to Synthesis, the livestock sector often flies below the radar when governments craft their growth and expansion plans.
The report says livestock and poultry accounted for almost half of Middlesex County's farm cash receipts in 2013.
It also points out livestock operations generate significant economic activity because of their need for more services and inputs - from truckers to vets, feed, labour and more.
One of the Synthesis report's key recommendations is that Middlesex County adopt strategies to support the livestock sector.
