Slow Marketings Prompt USDA To Lower Beef Production Forecast

The USDA has lowered it's forecasts for total U-S meat production in both 2015 and 2016.

The department lowered it's beef production forecast because of slower marketings of fed cattle and reduced cow slaughter.

Pork production forecasts for both years are unchanged.

Average U-S cattle prices are now expected to be lower both this year and next while the average hog prices are expected to be lower this year but unchanged for next year.

The average steer price for 2015 is expected to range from 154 to 158 dollars per hundredweight, down 4 dollars.

For 2016, the average price forecast has been lowered by 5 dollars to 150-162 dollars per hundredweight.

The average U-S barrow and gilt price for 2015 is forecast to be down by a dollar to from 49 to 50 dollars while the 2016 forecast is unchanged at 46 to 49 dollars per hundredweight.
