OSCIA: Biosecurity A Crop Concern, Too

The Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association wants farmers to remember that on-farm biosecurity applies to crops as well as to livestock.

Certified Crop Advisor Bill Ungar says biosecurity can help mitigate the transmission of pests which can devastate an entire year's work in short order.

The Association points out an on-farm disease outbreak could affect not only your farm but your neighbours, your industry and your country.

The CFIA is developing national biosecurity standards and producer guidelines.

They're already in place for grains and oilseeds and potatoes.

The OSCIA runs free biosecurity workshops to help farmers learn the ins and outs of assessing the biosecurity risks on their farms.

There's Growing Forward 2 funding available for the assessments - and cost-share funding available to make biosecurity improvements on the farm.

The last Growing Forward 2 cost-share application intake is November 16th to December 3rd.
