The President of the Huron Soil and Crop Improvement Association says the number of farmers planting cover crops is increasing every year.
Stefan Zehetner - the owner of Huron Cover Crops - was one of the demonstrators at the Association's recent demo day near Clinton.
He points out there's no right blend for every farm.
Zehetner says every farm is different and farmers are looking for different results so it's essential that they do their homework, determine the type of soil conditions they have and then what results they want from their cover crop.
He can then create a mix that will hopefully produce the results they're looking for but he says it still is a matter of trial and error and it might take a few attempts before they find the blend they're looking for.
Zehetner adds he often provides a few basic blends to try on a field and they plants a small part of the field with samples of more complex blends to see which one offers the best results but it's very much a matter of experimenting with different blends for the best results.
