Nuffield Scholarship Winners In Ontario

Two of this year's three Nuffield Canada agricultural scholarship winners are from Ontario.

Tony Balkwill is from Paris, Clair Doan from Norwich.

Balkwill owns Nithfield Advanced Agronomy and is a third generation farmer with land in the Oxford and Brant areas. He wins the inaugural Grain Farmers of Ontario Nuffield Scholarship. Balkwill will be looking at the challenges of accurately modernizing historical soil type maps into field specific management zones.

Doan is a turkey and grain farmer who is also the Associate Vice President of Agriculture for Ontario at National Bank of Canada. The Norwich-area farmer will focus on how Canada's supply managed sectors can manage during times of uncertainty with increased political and global market pressures.

The third Nuffield winner - Tim Smith of Alberta - plans to research the valuation of ecological goods and services provided by cattle ranching. His scholarship is sponsored by Glacier Media.

The three will joint with other scholars from around the world in February in Ireland.

From there they will study for a minimum of 10 weeks internationally to explore their chosen topic.
