Canadian, U-S Hog Slaughter Numbers Continue High

Canadian hog slaughter is running 2 point 7 per cent ahead of last year.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reports 15 point 1 million hogs slaughtered in federally- and provincially-inspected plants up to September 19th.

Ontario's hog slaughter so far this year of 3 point 7 million head is up 1 point 1 per cent from a year ago.

Federal figures put our live hog exports to the U-S up 11 point 6 per cent so far this year while our overall pork imports are up 4 point 4 per cent.

Last week's U-S hog slaughter of 2 point 276 million head was down a tenth of a per cent from the week before - but up almost 9 per cent from a year ago.

The University of Missouri's Ron Plain suggests there's some concern in the U-S about the amount of meat in cold storage.

He says the amount of pork in cold storage in the 'States at the end of August was up 3 point 6 per cent from the month before and almost 21 per cent more than a year ago.

Plain reports the total of frozen pork, beef, chicken and turkey in cold storage in the U-S the end of August was 2 point 385 billion pounds.

That's up 18 point 6 per cent from a year ago and the most for any month since October of 2002.
