Provincial Fruit And Veg Growers Concerned About Wetland Proposals

The Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association is expressing some concerns about proposals in the province's Wetland Conservation discussion paper.

Among it's concerns - the Association suggests there needs to be a clearer definition of what constitutes a wetland and that the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System is too subjective.

It's recommending that man-made wetlands be exempt from legislation where there is potential to use it as a source of irrigation for farming.

The Association also wants enhanced scientific rigour applied to the development of processes for the evaluation of wetland.

The Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association argues the province's farmers have a proven record of responsibility in managing wetland habitat every day.

While appreciating the government's efforts to be mindful of agricultural practices surrounding wetlands, the Association suggests more work has yet to be done in that area.

The OFVGA describes itself as the voice of Ontario's vegetable and greenhouse farmers.
