Safe Food Canada is a new public-private partnership to raise Canada's expertise in food protection.
President and CEO Brian Sterling says they want to create some common knowledge and understanding about food safety.
According to him, the industry and regulators are currently focussing on different areas, creating a dissonance between the two sides.
Sterling suggests learning similar science and knowledge will make the conversation less adversarial and more collaborative.
He says one of the obstacles the organisation will have to overcome is convincing organisations there is an economic gain to be made from coming up with a common approach to food safety.
Safe Food Canada includes representation from the food industry, academia and federal regulators.
