Slight Increase In Cattle, Hogs On Canadian Farms

There was a slight increase in the number of cattle on Canadian farms on January 1st.

The 12 million head was up 0 point 3 per cent from January 1st of 2015.

That's the first year-over-year increase since January of 2013.

However, it was still almost 20 per cent lower than the peak of January 2005.

Canadian hog producers had 13 point 3 million hogs on their farms January 1st - up 0.7 per cent from a year ago.

Sheep numbers were down 1 point 2 per cent.

And the number of dairy cows and heifers on Canadian farms were up almost half a per cent from January of 2015.

Statistics Canada reports 81 thousand 5 hundred and 90 farms reported having cattle and calves - down 0 point 8 per cent from a year ago.

6 thousand 9 hundred and 65 farms reported having hogs, down 0 point 4 per cent.
