This week's University of Missouri Hog Outlook suggests we could see a decline in the U-S breeding herd later this month.
The outlook points out U-S hogs have been unprofitable in recent months.
The USDA's next Hogs and Pigs report will be released March 25th.
However, the University's Ron Plain reports sow and gilt slaughter has only been up slightly so far this year, hinting any cutback will likely only be modest.
Last week's U-S hog slaughter was up 0.6 per cent from the week before - 0.5 per cent from a year ago.
The national negotiated barrow and gilt price was down 20 cents from the previous week.
