NFU-O Warns Of GM Alfalfa Seed In Ontario

Concerns are being raised about genetically modified alfalfa seed.

A member of the National Farmers Union-Ontario's Regional Council says some of those seeds have been sold in this province.

Katie Ward bases that on an announcement from Forage Genetics International.

According to Ward, one of the seed's traits is glyphosate tolerance.

She worries that could accelerate the spread of glyphosate-resistant weeds across Ontario.

Ward argues if alfalfa seed stocks become contaminated with the GM traits, it could devastate the Ontario organic industry and cost growers their export markets.

The NFU Ontario Regional Council member is calling on the federal and provincial agriculture ministers and Premier Wynne to put an end to Forage Genetics International bringing GM alfalfa into Ontario.
