Grey NFU Members Want MP's Help To Battle GM Alfalfa

The NFU-Ontario's Grey County local wants Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MP Larry Miller to help them battle genetically modified alfalfa seed.

They've sent Miller a letter asking him to support the NFU's call for a ban on the sale of GM alfalfa seed in Canada.

There are reports Forage Genetics International is considering making GM alfalfa seed available for sale to farmers in Eastern Canada this spring.

Supporters argue it can co-exist with non-GM alfalfa without risk of contamination.

But the National Farmers Union says that co-existence has apparently failed in the U-S.

NFU National President Jan Slomp is calling on the federal government to put border controls in place too prevent the importation of contaminated conventional alfalfa seed from the U-S.

Slomp points out many domestic and export markets completely reject alfalfa seeds, hay or pellets with any GM content.
