NFU Suggests Trade Deals Impair Ability To Meet Paris Environment Deal Goals

The National Farmers Union is urging the federal government to abandon its focus on maximizing trade in agricultural commodities.

In an open letter to the Prime Minister, the NFU argues farm income has not benefited from higher exports.

It says trade-oriented agriculture policy has increased food miles and greenhouse gas emissions and made Canada's food system more brittle.

According to the NFU, many of the points in the recent Paris Agreement on climate change are in conflict with the terms of both the Trans Pacific Partnership and the CETA deal with Europe.

It goes on to suggest those trade deals would seriously impair Canada's ability to meet the Paris Agreement goals.

The NFU letter says it's imperative for Canada to choose Paris over the trade deals.
