Weekly Hog Slaughter Down, Year-To-Date Up For Canada, Ontario

Hog slaughter volumes in Canada and in Ontario for the week ending May 7th were both down from a year ago.

Agriculture and AgriFood Canada says Canadian slaughter was down 1 point 1 per cent, Ontario's was down 7 point 4 per cent.

However, the year-over-year volumes continue to run higher than for the same period in 2015.

The Ontario slaughter is 4 point 2 per cent higher, the national slaughter is 3 point 1 per cent higher.

Federal figures have the Ontario weekly average price up 17 point 6 per cent from last year.

In the U-S, last week's hog slaughter was down 2 point 4 per cent from the week before - but up 1 point 6 per cent from the same week in 2015.

The national negotiated barrow and gilt average price Friday of $73.39 per hundredweight was up over $3.50 from the week before.
