DFO Chair Defends Direct Pitch To Federal Government

It's another chapter in the growing rift between dairy producers in Ontario and Quebec.

This time, the national dairy organisation is involved.

Dairy Farmers of Canada President Wally Smith is accusing the Dairy Farmers of Ontario of undermining the credibility of the DFC.

The national group is pushing Quebec's argument that the federal government needs to clamp down on imports of diafiltered milk that are eating into the market for Canadian milk.

However, Dairy Farmers of Ontario Chair Ralph Dietrich says his members feel putting more money into dairy industry infrastructure expansion is a better solution.

"We could end up with actual Canadian production of what is currently being imported and then the processors would have the choice to choose Canadian, if they so chose."

Dietrich suggests it's important whatever message the dairy industry takes to the federal government provide all the solutions available.

"The last thing we want is to get to the government and they give us their opinion or decision on one item and then say, oh, by the way, there's something else."

The DFO Chair is optimistic the producer groups can hammer out a common message to deliver to federal officials that will take into considerations the concerns of dairy farmers across the country.

Dairy Farmers of Ontario Chair Ralph Dietrich says the provincial position is that expanding the country's dairy processing infrastructure could lead to the resolution of key issues facing the industry.

Dietrich says his group is proposing both options be included in any recommendations made to the federal government by Dairy Farmers of Canada.

Dietrich argues it's important the government be made aware of all the ways the problem can be addressed.
