Canadian Hog Slaughter Higher, U-S Lower Than Last Year

Our exports of live hogs to the U-S are up, our imports of pork products down from a year ago.

Agriculture and AgriFood Canada says live hog exports to the U-S are up 9 point 1 per cent.

Pork imports are down 4 and a half per cent.

The department reports Canadian federal hog slaughter is running just over 3 per cent ahead of last year.

In the U-S, last week's hog slaughter was down 1 point 9 per cent from the week before and down 1 per cent from the same week last year.

The University of Missouri's Ron Plain reports last Friday's U-S average negotiated barrow and gilt price was $74.30 per hundredweight - up 91 cents from the week before.

Plain also says Iowa State University calculations had the average profit for Iowa hogs in April at $9.33 a head - the third consecutive profitable month for Iowa producers.
