Feeder Pig Shipments Boost Canadian Hog Exports To U-S

Federal hog slaughter in Canada is up about 2 and a half per cent so far this year from a year ago.

Agriculture and AgriFood Canada reports the Ontario average price for the week ending June 11th was up 2 point 4 per cent from a year ago.

Live hog exports to the U-S are up 7 point 3 per cent.

An 8 per cent drop in barrow, gilt and sow exports is more than offset by an 11 and a half per cent increase in feeder pig shipments to the U-S so far this year.

Last week's U-S hog slaughter was 2 point 16 million head - up 3 point 5 per cent from the week before and 1 point 3 per cent from a year ago.

The national negotiated barrow and gilt price in the U-S Friday morning was up over 3 dollars from the week before and $4.45 higher than a year ago.

Iowa State University professor Lee Schulz says hog producers in that state made an average profit of just over 25 dollars a head for market hogs sold in May.

According to Doctor Schulz, that's the fourth consecutive profitable month for Iowa farrow to finish operations.
