Ontario Growers Cut Back On Soybean Planting This Spring

Ontario farmers planted less soybeans and about the same amount of corn this year compared to a year ago.

Ontario corn acreage was steady at 2 point 1 million acres.

Nationally, soybean acreage was 5 point 5 million acres - up 1 per cent - largely based on record acreage in Manitoba.

Canadian farmers reported planting 3 point 3 million acres of corn for grain this year, up almost 2 per cent from 2015.

Statscan reports an almost 4 per cent drop in overall wheat acreage so far this year, a slight drop in canola acreage and lower seeded areas for both oats and barley compared to 2015.

The agency says total lentils acreage reached a record high of 5 point 8 million acres this year - up almost 48 per cent from 2015.

Saskatchewan accounts for 90 per cent of the total lentils acreage in Canada.
