Demand For Duck On The Rise

The game may be duck, duck, goose, but the business these days appears to be duck, duck, and more duck.

With the increasing demands local and international markets, duck production is being stepped up across the country.

Earlier this year, Mexico reopened it's borders to Canadian poultry.

Market access for duck growers to Mexico is worth approximately three million dollars a year.

Brome Lake, a pekin producer in Quebec has plans to spend 30 million dollars in converting an old beef processing facility into a new duck processor.

King Cole Ducks of Newmarket is also stepping up production to hit the Mexican market.

CEO Debbi Conzelmann says the demand for Canuck duck has also been growing locally as the immigrant population from countries like the Czech-Republic and Russia continues to grow.

She also notes duck is increasingly becoming a regular food to grocery buyers.

Along with fellow top producer, Fraser Valley Specialty Poultry in B.C., it's expected the three companies could double their yearly output of 5 and a half million ducks in the next four years.
