Ag and Agri-Food Minister Says Trade With China is Good for Our Farmers

Last week's trade talks with China will certainly lead to increased farm exports, quite noticeably so in the beef and pork sector.

In an interview with CKNX, Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, notes the improved beef exports alone will mean millions of dollars coming back towards those producers.

"We secured good markets for grains and beef and opened the door for many other things which is vitally important," said the Minister.

Being a farmer all his life, Mr. MacAulay knows the ups and downs that go with the business and he feels boosting exports to China will help add some ups to Canada's farmers.

With the possibility of a TransPacific Partnership on the way, the Minister says he's still listening to his constituents and evaluating the situation.

"If we can sell more meat to South Korea and more meat to other countries around the world like China, then it means more demand for our meat," he says.

"More demand means more dollars and that's what we're supposed to do."
