Ontario Hog Volumes Well Ahead of the Rest of the Country

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada report hog slaughter to date for the country is up 2.1 per cent from last year.

Ontario volumes are up by 3.4 per cent.

AAFC also notes prices are down between 22 and 32 per cent across Canada.

Prices here dipped the least of all provinces.

Ron Plain of the University of Missouri credits the 7.6 per cent year-over-year decline in pork imports into the U.S. to a lack of Canadian exports.

He adds American hog slaughter last week was down 2.8 per cent from the previous week's record.

The 2.45 million head is still up 2.5 points from the same time last year.

Plain points out that led to a jump in hog futures. December ended the week up 97 and a half cents, settling at $47.12 and a half. February was up $1.37 and a half.

The U.S. national negotiated barrow and gilt price averaged $41.15 yesterday, down $1.56 for the week and $9.54 from 2015.
