Avian Flu Free

Ontario is free of notifiable avian influenza.

The message is posted on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency website.

And the government has notified the World Organisation for Animal Health that as of Wednesday, Ontario is considered free of notifiable avian influenza.

The declaration is based on the completion of a three month surveillance period following the eradication of notifiable avian influenza in commercial poultry which includes duck farms and hatcheries in the province.

According to the CFIA it took the combined efforts of the commercial poultry industry, individual bird owners, the Province of Ontario and local authorities in the eradication effort.

Commercial and backyard bird owners are being reminded that good biosecurity practices should continue to reduce any risk of avian influenza being reintroduced to domestic birds in Ontario.
