Little Movement In Cattle Prices Last Week

Cattle prices were quite quiet last week.

The Beef Farmers of Ontario report fed steer and heifer prices both held fully steady throughout the week.

Steers averaged $144.44 while heifers traded at $145.11.

Both are still about 25 dollars below prices from a year ago.

Cull cows picked up $4.19 last week.

BFO notes the average of price $75.81 was the highest weekly average since September.

Ontario railgrade prices saw steer prices decline by an average of 50 cents, while heifers lost 75 cents.

The farmers also point out stocker and feeder cattle receipts were light for the week, down 540 head from the week prior, and trade was active with steady prices.

Kevin Grier of the Canadian Boxed Beef Report says big retailers are still just buying for features as they try to wait out current price increases.

He notes this week's flyers from six of nine major Ontario grocery chains have beef featured on the front page.
