The Beef Cattle Research Council is doing its best to make sure scientific efforts and funding aren't going to waste.
The council says by pooling resources and coordinating projects, check-off dollars are maximized by increasing collaboration while preventing duplicate studies.
To make sure research is headed where producers want, the group held an online survey last year which covered various topics and was answered by more than 500 beef producers across the country.
Workshops were also held to further narrow down focus.
As a result, research this year will target beef quality, food safety, animal welfare, feed efficiency and antimicrobial resistance.
The council notes the next step will be for researchers to submit letters of intent, which will all be reviewed by June.
Producer members of the BCRC can then vote to decide which proposals should be supported.
