Pork Producers Proving PED Protocols Productive

Over the last few weeks, a couple of positive PED tests have popped up in pigs in Southern Ontario.

While the goal is to eliminate the viral disease from all herds in the province, Dr. Mike DeGroot, co-owner and veterinarian at the Ripley-Huron Veterinary Clinic, says things are looking positive for Ontario's pork producers and having a couple of cases at this time of year is somewhat typical.

"We definitely have less PED positive sites then we did at any time since it broke in 2014. Usually we get a little trickle in March or April, but in previous winters we also had them in December and January that we didn't see this year either. I'm hoping there's no new cases but there could be one or two more yet that could happen before the warm weather really kicks in."

DeGroot feels the biosecurity measures currently in place are sufficient.

He says implementing them on a daily basis is hard work, but the fact that only two cases have been found this winter is proof that producers are putting in a great effort keeping up with biosecurity protocols.
