The province wants to increase the competitiveness of Ontario's greenhouse sector.
Yesterday, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Jeff Leal announced that support is coming to develop new technology, encourage investments, and boost productivity through the Greenhouse Competitiveness and Innovation Initiative.
The province is set to inject $19 million in funding for the program.
The goal of the initiative is to reduce production costs, improve quality, and increase productivity through new technologies.
The government feels the support will help the industry maintain a leadership position while growing export markets, which in turn will foster more jobs and the growth of the economy.
Ontario's greenhouse sector grows by an average of 150 acres a year.
The current 2,900 acres represents almost half of Canada's production.
