Money for dairy research

The Dairy Research Cluster is getting $11.4 million from the federal government.

The announcement was made at the Dairy Farmers of Canada Annual General.

The goal of the Dairy Research Cluster is to foster public trust, drive innovation and stimulate economic growth of the Canadian dairy sector. Part of that is through cutting-edge research in areas of bovine genetics, animal health and welfare, milk production automation, forage breeding, milk safety and quality and environmental sustainability.

The cluster will also support the development of management practices and tools to reduce on-farm economic losses from production limiting diseases.

Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau also reinforced the Government of Canada’s commitment to the supply management system.

Following the ratification of the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, the federal budget included up to $3.9 billion for producers in Canada’s supply managed sector.

Dairy is the second largest agricultural sector in Canada.
