Technology, workforce important to farming

As Agriculture Week continues, provincial officials say it's an opportunity for everyone the community to thank and show appreciation to farmers.

Beyond trade issues, Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker says technology and a reliable workforce are a couple of key issues for farmers.

"I just toured a couple of farms the other day," said Walker. "Looking at things like new technology that is helping farmers, and this farmer is a fifth generation was suggesting the ability for them to use like drone technology to go in and look overtop of a crop very closely to be preventative."

Walker says knowing where food comes from and supporting those who grow, harvest and make it, strengthens communities, supports a sustainable environment, and creates jobs.

"I think one of the biggest challenges always is making sure we have a reliable work supply so people can be able to work at those farms."

In his release Walker is encouraging the community recognize farmers with Thanksgiving this weekend:

  • Visit a farmers’ market, on-farm market, pick-your-own farm or farmgate or check the map for a location close to you
  • Local markets in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound include: Owen Sound, Meaford, Lion's Head, Flesherton, Keady, Southgate, Hanover, Wiarton. Please visit their websites to find out which markets are open this weekend or to plan a visit next season
  • Look for the Foodland Ontario logo when you’re shopping in local grocery stores to know you’re buying Ontario
  • Find a classic or try a new recipe for your Thanksgiving feast, check out these seasonal recipes featured by Foodland Ontario
  • Make it possible for other Ontario families to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal by donating food items, money or time to your local food bank, food program or another charitable organization
