Huron County looking at new agriculture opportunities

Huron County's Economic Development Department is working with the county's agricultural sector in exploring potential new markets.

Economic Development Director Cody Joudry points out there isn't going to be any new farm land but there might be some opportunities in exploring new markets.

"Everything from artisan cheese to growing more hops for the craft brewery market that's taken off, or growing flowers or berries. It's really about investigating what those options are and trying to find, is there a market, what do the numbers look like and investigate it from there," said Joudry.

Joudry also points out there could be opportunities to add value to the crops already grown here.

He says there are lots of niche market opportunities that might be out there, not necessarily about growing products but about processing, doing more of the work here instead of getting someone else to do it and then buying it back.
