Harness racing association wants mediation with the province

The Ontario Harness Horse Association is calling on the province to engage in what is is calling meaningful mediation with the breeders of Standardbred racehorses in Ontario, following a court ruling in late June.

The case involved the end of the Slots at Racetracks Program under the previous Liberal government.

At that time breeders of Standardbred racehorses began a legal challenge that has lasted over six years ago. And on June 29, the court determined that breeders of Standardbred horses in Ontario should be compensated for damages that they incurred as a result of the cancellation of Slots at Racetracks Program.

According to the OHHA, the agricultural industry of breeding, training and racing Standardbred horses in Ontario is an essential component of the agricultural economy. Particularly in small rural communities where most of the activity occurs.

The OHHA wants a mediated settlement.
