Airport Turbines Can Stay

Transport Canada has pulled back its order to take down wind turbines near the Chatham-Kent Municipal Airport.

The group initially ordered the tear down for fear that pilots would run into the turbines if unfamiliar with the area. In an email distributed to municipal council, Transport Canada now says it can put measures in place to ensure pilots are aware of the eight turbines.

"Clearly it is a win for the Chatham-Kent taxpayer," says Ward 2 Councillor Trevor Thompson. "We won't be on the hook for taking these things down, and it looked like that was the way it was going to go."

But fellow Councillor Frank Vercouteren wants to know why this took six months to figure out. "There's definitely a reason why all of a sudden this is okay." The official order was first announced on July 2, 2014.
