Essex Talking Policing With Amherstburg

The Town of Essex is going to have formal discussions with the Town of Amherstburg on policing services.

A letter from Amherstburg asking Essex to talk about shared policing services was met with approval from Essex Council on Monday night.

Essex CAO Russ Phillips says any potential policing partnership would have many hurdles.

"Certainly facilities, personnel, all of the things that go into maintaining a service like that; jurisdictional issues," says Phillips. "It's even a matter of going to justice and making sure you can do the things your proposing to do."

Phillips says there have already been exploratory talks with area CAO's on potential policing partnerships, including discussion on a potential regional service. He adds the policing services in Windsor and Chatham-Kent are also part of the equation.

"They have had some discussion with us on the intent that they would also participate in the conversation," says Phillips. "That's not to say they can take it on, but at least we're talking to one another."

Phillips says a report updating the situation will head back to council.
