Another Wind Project In CK

Council can put its support behind another wind project in Chatham-Kent Monday night.

Samsung Renewable Energy Inc. and Pattern Renewable Holdings Canada are planning to build up to 90 wind turbines in north Chatham-Kent. Specifically, they would go up north of Chatham, as well as in the Dover area.

Chief Legal Officer John Norton says Samsung and Pattern are looking for the municipality's blessing as they apply for construction. "The project is currently in the process of receiving approval from the province, and will be expected to be built in 2016-2017."

The municipality would also receive further benefits. Samsung and Pattern would give them $4-million to put towards community benefits, and allow hydro company Entegrus to buy into the ownership of the project.

Chatham-Kent already has a number of turbines around the Blenheim area which generate 270 MW of power. If approved, the North Kent Wind Project could generate up to 200 MW of electricity.
