Walpole Island Elementary School is one of several organizations that will benefit from an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant.
The OTF announced on Tuesday that the school will receive $178,700 over three years to provide counselling and mentoring services to First Nations students in the Walpole Island Elementary School community.
Counselor Ken O'Neil says the new program will be focused on assessing student needs, developing a support plan, and incorporating the resources to help the children and their families.
"We're going to be able to hire a full-time worker -- we're looking at another 30 hours a week. And then having another coordinator here," he says. "So we're going to have the staffing, and we're going to have either a child and youth worker or a social worker right in the school working with specific children that have specific needs."
The Ontario Trillium Foundation is Canada’s largest granting foundation, with over $110-million awarded annually to around 1,300 nonprofit and charitable organizations across Ontario.
