Warm Weather Ends Syrup Season

This week's warmer temperatures, especially at night when it hasn't dropped below freezing, has put an end to the flow of sap used for maple syrup.

South Chatham-Kent syrup producer Don Giffin says it seems like a short season but that's because it started a little late.

"Pretty well in the wrap-up now and it looks like it is not going to be as bountiful as we hoped for but we did make a lot of good quality syrup," he says. "It got warm and it's not going to freeze, you need that -5 C to 5 C. We're into April and that's when you expect to shut off."

He says there will still be demonstrations in the sugar bush Saturday in conjunction with the pancake breakfast in Shrewsbury.
