Police Costs Still Concerning

Chatham-Kent's next chief of police says keeping services affordable will continue to be an issue well into the future.

Gary Conn, whose promotion from deputy chief was announced this week, says there is a lot of thought going into how to manage higher costs.

"Crime rates are declining and that's a good thing. But having said that, calls for service are still increasing," he says. "There are many committees, organizations, for example, F-PAC Future of Policing Advisory Committee, which have been working diligently with new and fresh ideas."

He says a lot of calls that police have to deal with involve social issues, rising from mental health and poverty concerns. While they are not crime issues, Conn says they become police issues.
