Chatham-Kent Council could see its compensation changed, but for Mayor Randy Hope, it won't come soon enough.
A council remuneration will take place and councillors voted for any approved changes to take effect in 2018. Mayor Hope believes the changes should take effect immediately, adding he wants to keep underworking council members in check.
He gives the example of councillors serving on multiple committees as someone who deserves to earn more than others. "Why should one councillor be doing more than another councillor and receiving the same compensation? To me, it was a way to avoid and just not deal with the issue."
If administration finds a change in compensation is necessary, it will be the next elected council that has to face the adjustments. Municipal councils have a legal obligation to review compensation every four years according to the Municipal Act.
