Funding Cuts Could Close Schools

The Lambton Kent District School Board is again facing possible school closures after a double whammy of funding cuts over the next few years.

Enrollments are projected to continue falling and Superintendent of Business Ron Andruchow says special provisions that topped up funding for smaller and underutilized schools will be phased out over the next few years.

"We will be seeing a reduction of about $1.2-million in this operating grant, when it is finally phased in in 2017-18, it looks like we will be seeing a reduction of about $4-million," he says. "This reduction in funding is going to require us to have vigorous management over the next several years of our underutilized school space and we certainly can expect that accommodation reviews are going to be needed."

Andruchow says it is too early to say which schools or areas might be affected but expects the process to begin in the fall.
