People unable to speak on the phone due to physical impairments will soon be able to text 911.
Chatham-Kent Police Chief designate Gary Conn says it's mandated by Canada's telecommunications regulator.
"They indicated to all services you are going to have to provide text 911 capabilities for the visually and hearing impaired," he says. "Some (police) services have already implemented it, for example Sarnia, Windsor and I believe the OPP."
Chatham-Kent's equipment will need an upgrade to allow the service to work. Bell Canada was the low bidder with a $53,782 quote.
The new system will be operational in June.
